FIBRE GLASS RESTORERS
> Need to do something for a few seasons until I collect enough boat bucks to repaint the hull.... Chalky and splotchy is what I've got. Spot spray painting in spring has taken its toll.
I read in Practical Sailor about three polymer products that they recommended as good short time fixes: Poli-Glow, New Glass, and Vertglas. Can anyone comment on these or another product you've liked?? I'd also like to order by the gallon, since these products aren't cheap, and it's reported that the standard 32 oz. size is enough to give the required 5 coats to a 25' boat.... we've got a 35'. Several follow up coats per season are needed after the first season, so I'd like to purchase a gallon once and be done with it.
Lastly, I've found the web site for Poly-Glow and Vertglas, but not for New Glass, anyone know a site for New Glass??

I had very chalky boat and tried all kinds of products to make it look better. I finally found something called NYALIC. It is great it made the hull look new again.
It was a bit of a pain use the first time because you have to take all the old wax off make sure your boat is clean. It is thin like water. You apply it with a sponge brush or you can buy it in aerosol. A litre and brush to covered my 27 with three coats. It looks new. I give it one coat every spring now. It is much easier than waxing every spring and the results are better.

I have used the product and it makes the hull shiny but if your gelcoat is faded spotty it will not restore the colour.

Hi Kate, I know that Joe Bognor on this list has used Poli-glow and I saw his boat and it looks fabulous. I bought the nuglass but haven't used it as I have heard that it is very difficult to remove and they do not provide a cleaner which is the basis of a good result. It will make stains shiny but does not remove them.
Hope this helps a wee bit,

The first time I bought it was in a boat store here in Winnipeg. They stopped carrying it and I had to look for the manufacturer on the Internet. The product is used on the space shuttle to protect the metal work. I emailed them for the name of a distributor and I can now buy it locally through them.
Here is the email address nyalic@flash.net . Take a look at there web site and if your interested email them with a request for a dealers name in your area. It really made an incredible difference on my boat. Took all the chalkiness away.

Ali-Arc industries is the supplier here in Winnipeg. This is the pricing I was quoted this year.
There is no mention of a price by litre. I don't no if they have stopped selling in that volume or if they forgot to mention it. Coating my boat once a year, a litre last me a few years. I have enough for one more season. These are in Canadian dollars.
For an Aerosol can: $30.33
For a 1 gallon cab: $270.20.
For a 5 gallon pail: $1312.00
I talked via e-mail with the developer of Newglass and he said it (newglass) comes off easily with a product called Grease Lightning. Sounds like a cleaner. he indicated the Newglass comes easily.

Practical Sailor's last review of the product specificly tested the need to strip NewGlass and PoliGlow before recoating. They found the gloss was about as good if you did not strip the old finish.
That is what I do on Belle. Once a year I run her up into a sand bank in 4 feet of water, wash her down good to take off any dirt, polish out any mars or black spots, and recoat. Figure about 4 hours. Which is a lot less time than would be required to wax..... and it looks a lot better, too.
