Opinions on the 121 Express
Looking for some informed opinions about C&C 121. Is this future of C&C yachts. Are those of you who own some of the classic designs warming up to whats new. I would like pros and cons of what you think about this boat. I would appreciate your opinions.
I am thinking about racing/cruising on the Chesapeake with trips to New England and Maine.
It's not the future of C&C, except as a brand name, as it is an entirely different concept than the original purpose/niche of C&C.
The "classic" C&C (whatever that means, since the designs changed a lot over the years)was coceived as a cruiser-racer. It was designed to be fast and well-built, employing cutting edge technology in materials, with amenities that would satisfy cruisers. Their competition included Sabre and Tartan. The Express Series, designed and built by Tartan, is aimed at the J market. It turns the concept on its head: it is a racer-cruiser. Built to a lower price point and designed not to compete with Tartan, it emphasizes speed and more austere interiors, with less storage, and less teak, joinery and other fitting niceties. For those who like Js, it may well appeal. For those who like the "old" C&Cs, it has considerably less appeal, with the exception of those who primarily use their C&Cs for around the cans racing.
For me, the last of the "real" C&Cs provided exactly the balance I was seeking. It sails extremely well, is fast and is a good light-air boat. It is also unusually well designed and equipped down below, with a larger than king-sized aft berth in a separate cabin and a separate shower with fixed shower head, not to mention lots of gorgeous teak. It has essentially the interior of a 40 footer in a boat that measures 35' 6" overall. It is comfortable enough to spend 5 weeks cruising from CT to Maine (which we did a couple of years ago) without feeling cramped or like "steerage" passengers. And (did I mention?) it's fast. I've looked at the 110 and 121 and they are clearly intended for someone else, not for me. (I suspect Tartan would hope to sell me a Tartan when I go looking for the next, bigger boat, not a C&C, even though Pukalani is my second C&C. The prior was a 1980 C&C 34.) I'm not a fan. But that is just my opinion based on my priorities. I'm sure there are dissenting views. That's what makes this list so much fun.

The "future" of C&C is pretty much gone vis a vis it is only a name, and perhaps a concept...dual purpose cruiser/racer. Leaving that aside (you're not really comparing apples with apples), the 121 to my eye is a fine boat and appears to be quite fast. It is a mid priced boat, and in that respect it's fit and finish are okay...not great. It is not on par with the old (whatever vintage) C&C, but again, it's not supposed to be...it's cheaper. My major complaint is that the deck hardware and fittings are undersized for a racer, and they've now stopped using Offshore Spars, which in my opinion is a big step down.
I think Ken had excellent comments and I agree for the most part, with one exception: they're not competing with J boats. J's are much more expensive, but you get what you pay for. The current C&C's are competing against the Beneteau 40.7, Dehler 39, and perhaps X-Yachts (althought the X and Dehler have better finish)...the mid range racer/cruiser market.
