Owner's Review for the 1977 C&C 29
I purchased my C&C29 Mk I in 1994. It was priced at the low end of the market
and hence was in poor condition. I elected to save money at the time and do an
upgrade myself. Overall the boat is stoutly built but light enough to glide along
in light air. She has a 9" lead keel extension which stiffens the boat in a blow.
Since it was installed by a previous owner I cannot comment on how it has
improved the performance.
The roller furling, autopilot and cockpit traveler
make it easy to singlehand. Aesthetically she is a stunning looker with well
proportioned lines and nice accents (teak, cove stripe, etc.). This boat also
has a lot of room down below for its size. It sleeps 5 but comfortably cruises
with no more than three. I have yet to remodel the 70's vintage interior-to me
the exterior is more important, to my girlfriend the interior is all that matters.
I have had to replace the rotted wooden frames under the mast step like a lot of
other owners. If you think this is a job just try to replace and reseal the
rub-rail or repaint the boat from stem to stern which is what I am now doing.
I sailed the boat from Benton Harbor to the North Channel and crossed Lake
Michigan a few times before deciding on a refit in 1998. I plan to relaunch
in 2001.
Work in progress: Strip (Imron) hull and recoat with Awlgrip-Topsides Vivid
Red, Cove and Boot stripes in 'snow white'. Below waterline-recoat with
Awlgrip Goldstar ablative bottom paint, Prep spars and coat with snow white,
replace rub-rail, paint deck, replace teak and holly sole.
...Then back down the river to my slip provided the river is high enough next year!
